Did the Internet Kill the Photography Star? by Linda Shantz

Image
Image reproduced by kind permission of the artist Linda Shantz The progression of the internet has been both a blessing and a curse to artists. On the plus side, we are able to reach a much larger audience with our work, and do more marketing on our own than the old days. The negative is that sharing our work online – through websites, blogs, and social media – makes us vulnerable to image theft. One of my artist friends, Michelle Grant , likes to say, “You can die of exposure,” and when it comes to the internet, it’s very nearly true! Image theft has become a huge problem for artists and photographers . Just in case you don’t know, grabbing someone else’s photos (by right-clicking or doing a screen capture, that sort of thing) and sharing it with your friends is more than wrong – it’s illega l. We artists are usually nice people, but this sort of thing makes us rabid. We hate appearing as ogres. It’s really not in our nature. We’d rather be creating new work than chasing aft...

Johnny Jo- Sketched by Monica Dahl

Journal Entry 2010 Monica Dahl. All rights reserved Alive Johnny had this ability of enchanting people with his magic tail-wagging "smile", little did I know he could do it after his death . A short time after " Johnny Jo " died, one of my readers (fellow artist Monica Dahl) contacted me asking for permission to use a " JJ photograph" as a reference . Johnny Jo Journal entry close-up. Pencil on Paper Monica Dahl. All rights reserved The result is a wonderful sketch capturing his whole Johnny-ness; his big-hair - big eyes - big heart. The result a beautiful timeless entry into Monica's very personal and precious traveling sketchbook. The result a tear in my eye and a smile on my lips. Here is one more example of Monica's delicate and beautiful pencil work. Hope pencil on paper. Monica Dahl.2011 All rights reserved.

Fine Art America -Fine art printing.

Image
If you remember, a few weeks ago, guest blogger Michael Cash wrote a very informative article on how to post artwork on the web. Fine Art America was mentioned. My curiosity awakened. Over the last week, extensive research and picking of my fellow artist and friend Kim Santini 's brain, has been under way... the result: I've taken the plunge. Kim 's advice and feed-back about FAA was the last little push needed to start swimming in this massive virtual world of fine art printing. (If you have a moment, be sure to check out Kim's super work also available on Fine Art America.) Fine Art America is the biggest place online for buying and selling fine art prints. The artist provides the image and the info, they do the rest: from printing through matting and framing to shipping. The buyer can choose between standard prints, canvas prints, framed prints or originals. I am proud to announce (and show off) my new online printing services . Carefully selected and now availabl...

"Post Your Artwork Online Anytime" by Michael Cash

Post your Artwork Online Anytime by Michael Cash Uploading artwork onto the internet is something that has been available to many for the past decade, but only in the past several years has it been quite so easy. With the latest smartphones, laptops, and tablets on the market, it is easier than ever to upload media onto the internet instantly. While uploading music onto the internet has become quite mainstream, it can be difficult to find a means of uploading fine art pieces onto the internet. Some sites cost money in order to upload artwork, and some web sites are merely for display only. Of the plethora of modern devices which are capable of uploading artwork from practically anywhere, the laptop is definitely the most robust device. It does not offer the same degree of mobility as some of the smaller devices, but most laptops do have access to wifi, and use hardware that is much more powerful than the most powerful tablet, or smartphone. In addition to a larger storage capacity, l...
